Bilingual SEO: ranking in Bangla and English on one website

Your customers search in three scripts and one language habit. Here is how to build a site that captures all of it.

A Bangladeshi buyer might type a product name in English, the problem in Bangla, and the location in Banglish, all within the same hour. Most websites here pick one language, rank for a third of the demand, and never learn about the rest.

একই কাস্টমার কখনো বাংলায়, কখনো ইংরেজিতে, কখনো বাংলিশে সার্চ করে - সাইট সেভাবেই তৈরি হওয়া দরকার।

Decide the structure before writing anything

Two structures work. Pick one and stay with it.

  • Subfolders on one domain, for example /bn/ for Bangla pages with English at the root. Simplest to maintain and all authority stays on one domain. This is the right default for almost every business here.
  • Separate domains per language. Only worth it when the two businesses are genuinely run separately, because you then build two sets of authority from zero.
Mixing both languages inside one page is the one option to avoid. Neither version reads well and search engines cannot tell what the page is for.

Tell search engines which version is which

  • Add hreflang tags linking each page to its counterpart, using bn for Bangla and en for English, plus an x-default for the version shown to everyone else.
  • Every page must reference itself in its own hreflang set, or the whole set is ignored.
  • Set the html lang attribute correctly on each template. A Bangla page marked lang="en" confuses both crawlers and screen readers.
  • Keep canonicals pointing at the same-language version, never at the other language.

Handle Banglish properly

Banglish, Bangla words typed in Latin script, is where a lot of real commercial demand sits, and it rarely appears in keyword tools. Two sources find it: Search Console query reports, where you will see spellings nobody planned for, and the way your own customers write in WhatsApp and comments.

Use those spellings where they read naturally, in headings, FAQ questions and body copy. Do not build a separate page for every spelling variant, because they are the same intent and the pages would compete with each other.

Translation is not the job

A translated page ranks for translated phrases, which are often not what people search. Write each language version against its own keyword research. The English page for a service and the Bangla page for the same service can legitimately lead with different points, because the audiences ask different first questions.

Technical details that break bilingual sites

  • Fonts. Bangla webfonts are heavy. Subset them and preload only what the page needs, or mobile performance suffers.
  • Automatic redirects by browser language. They trap users and crawlers in the wrong version. Offer a visible switcher instead.
  • The language switcher must link to the equivalent page, not send everyone back to the homepage.
  • Structured data, titles and meta descriptions need translating too, not just page copy.
  • Both versions belong in the sitemap, with their hreflang relationships intact.

What to measure

Split Search Console by page path so each language reports separately. Watch impressions, clicks and average position per language, and track which language actually converts. Many Bangladeshi businesses find Bangla brings the volume while English brings the higher-value enquiries, and that changes where the next set of pages should go.
