The Page indexing report lists every reason Google did not index a URL. Many of these are normal. The goal is to make sure no important page sits in the wrong row.
Usually normal
- Page with redirect: the old URL redirects to a new one. Normal after migrations, as long as the target is indexed.
- Alternate page with proper canonical tag: Google is respecting your canonical. Normal for filtered or duplicate variants.
- Excluded by noindex tag: fine for pages you intentionally hide, a problem for pages you want to rank.
- Not found (404): fine for removed pages with no value, a problem for pages that still get links or traffic.
Needs attention
- Server error (5xx): your server failed when Google visited.
- Redirect error: loops, chains or broken redirects.
- Soft 404: the page looks empty or like an error to Google.
- Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user: your canonical signals conflict.
- Blocked by robots.txt on pages you want indexed.
How to read the report without panicking
The Page indexing report lists every URL Google knows about, including ones you never meant to rank. A large Not indexed number is normal for most sites. The useful question is not how many pages are excluded, but whether any page you want in search is in the wrong group. Start by filtering the report with your sitemap, which shows only the URLs you submitted as important.
A quick triage order
- 1Server error (5xx) and Redirect error: fix first, they can block whole sections.
- 2Blocked by robots.txt or Excluded by noindex tag: confirm each block is intentional.
- 3Not found (404) on URLs that should exist: restore or redirect them.
- 4Crawled or Discovered - currently not indexed: review quality and internal links.
- 5Alternate page with proper canonical and Page with redirect: usually leave as they are.
Validating a fix
After fixing an issue, open it in the report and click Validate fix. Google re-checks a sample of URLs and then the rest over the following days or weeks. The status moves from Started to Passed or Failed. A failed validation shows which URLs still have the problem.
